Get to know 80+ Ratings on Power Supply

this time I will discuss a topic that is closely related to that, namely the 80Plus Power Rating.

Power Rating 80PLUS is a certification aimed at computer power supplies, whether the power supply is efficient enough or not in drawing power from our home sockets. Because many power supplies are very inefficient in using energy in our homes.

80PLUS itself has several levels from the lowest to the highest, of course the higher the better because the more efficient it will be

Before that we also need to know that Indonesia uses 220V electricity, why do we need to know this? because it will affect the calculation of the efficiency level of 80PLUS.

80 Plus Power Rating tiers

1. 80PLUS

At this level the explanation is quite simple, namely, a Power Supply with a load of 20%, 50%, and 100% of the power supply capacity has an efficiency level of at least 80%.

But because Indonesia uses 220V voltage, the efficiency level in the rating is

For a load rate of 20% the minimum power efficiency is 82%

For a load of 50% the minimum power efficiency is 85%

While at 100% load the minimum efficiency is 82%

2. 80PLUS Bronze

for a load rate of 20% the minimum power efficiency is 85%

For a load of 50% the minimum power efficiency is 88%

While at 100% load the minimum efficiency is 85%

3. 80PLUS Silver

For a load rate of 20% the minimum power efficiency is 87%

For a load of 50% the minimum power efficiency is 90%

While at 100% load the minimum efficiency is 87%

4. 80PLUS® Gold

80PLUS Gold at 220V should be called 90PLUS (My Personal Opinion)

Because the level of Efficiency on all Loads except 100% is at least 90%

For a load rate of 20% the minimum power efficiency is 90%

For a load of 50% the minimum power efficiency is 92%

While at 100% load the minimum efficiency is 89%

5. 80PLUS Platinum

For a load rate of 20% the minimum power efficiency is 92%

For a load of 50% the minimum power efficiency is 94%

While at 100% load the minimum efficiency is 90%

Why do we use a non-redundant EU Internal 230V calculation?

Because we in Indonesia use 220V electricity (close to 230V) and Redundant only exists on the PSU for the Datacenter.

Okay now we know what 80PLUS® is, but at 80% efficiency where does that 20% go?

The answer: to heat, because of the change in current from AC to DC the lost energy becomes heat.

Do You Need a Power Supply with this 80PLUS® Rating?

The answer depends on you, if you feel you want to save on your electricity expenses for the coming years this is one solution, besides that this PSU with 80PLUS has good and reliable component quality. so it could be a sign that the PSU you have is of good quality.

Example calculation:

You have a 500W Power Supply with a 250W load.

Thus the efficiency of the power supply above is at the highest level because it is at 50% Load

The calculation formula is quite easy, namely: AC = I / EF (%)

AC = electricity that is drawn by the power supply from our house

I(W) = is the Power Supply Load in Watt

EF(%) = Efficiency Level in percent

With the example above can be entered

AC = 250W / 85%

AC = 250W / 0.85

AC = 294.1W

So with the example above, the electricity that our Power Supply draws from the house is 294.1W

With increasing efficiency, of course, the more electricity we save in our homes, but there is a price to pay of course to get a PSU with a higher Power Rating.

Is a large Watt power supply always a good thing?

The answer is NO, because the PSU works most efficiently at 50% load, if your computer uses a 1500W PSU and your computer’s maximum load is 130W or less than 10%, then using the PSU is not saving but rather wasteful, because there is no definite standard what is the efficiency level at the <10% load.
